1. NEK CHAND’S ROCK GARDEN, CHANDIGARH

The zoo was inaugurated by the then governor of Punjab Mahendra Mohan Chaudhary, in 1977 and so the name Mahendra Chaudhary zoological park. The zoo is located on the right bank of the river Ghaggar with Shivalik hills in the back. The zoo comprises around 1240 animals as well as birds which belong to around 103 species. The Asiatic Lion reserves and the Royal Bengal tiger are the major points of attraction in this zoo. Pinjore garden was renovated by Yadavindra Singh and is also known as Yadavindra Gardens as a symbol of honor to Maharaja Yadavindra Singh of the Patiala dynasty and was constructed in the Mughal style. The garden comprises 7 broad terraces. The 1st terrace has a palace built in Rajasthani style. The 2nd terrace has a painted palace. The 3rd terrace has cypress trees and flower beds, which lead to dense fruit trees. The 4th terrace has the Jal mahal. The next terrace is full of picturesque grooves, and the lowermost terrace has an open-air theater, which is designed as a disc-like structure. The Pinjore Baisakhi festival in April and the Pinjore mango festival in June and July are major festivals in the garden. The visiting time is between 7 AM and 10 PM.
