Memorial services are the hardest time when a family is going through a tremendous loss of a loved one. There is no denying that funeral events are quite different from the other programs we occasionally attend. However you must know who to act appropriately at a funeral program, so, you don’t end up hurting someone’s sentiment. Knowing the proper Funeral etiquette can help you tackle the situation if it’s your first time at a memorial service. Here we are sharing a few dos and don’ts at a funeral:

Send a sympathy card or flowers:

As soon as to learn about someone dismiss the first thing should do is show up your support and condolences to the family by sending a sympathy card or flowers. Look for some decent online sympathy card and put some handwritten notes in a card to make it more personalized. If you wish to send the flowers make sure to attach a note with it. Avoid giving the flowers direct to family members. You must send the flowers to the memorial venue and the funeral organizing staff will look after it.

Dress Accordingly:

Most of us know wearing something black is the safest option when it comes to attending a funeral. Black is the traditional color code for a funeral program that can perfectly fit into such events, especially in settings with blue church chairs that offer a serene and respectful atmosphere. Yet, you should remember to keep your attire minimal and respectful. Avoid wearing casuals or over-the-top colors. Keep your dress more formal and less embellished.

Put Your Phone on Silent:

The moment you enter the funeral venue, make sure to either turn your phone off or it not at least put it on silent. It could be very rude and insensitive to the family if you continue sticking to your phone screen instead of showing interest in the ongoing activity. Do not take your phone out until it’s very necessary. If you have to make an urgent call or text, ensure to find an appropriate time and place to do so.

Go an Extra Mile to Help the Family:

Losing someone you love could be very painful. Showing your support to the family in one or another way could give them the strength to deal with these difficult times. You can express your love and care to the family in many possible ways. Taking food to the family is a very sweet gesture and they will surely appreciate it. You can also help the family with donations. A little charity from your end helps the family to serve the people better at the funeral program. Even if you are not in the situation to offer this help yet, giving your condolences can be overwhelming to the family. While grieving gives emotional strength to the person can mean everything, as it is the first thing the family is seeking.

Stay in touch:

Most of the people come forward to console the family until the funeral program. But we fail to release our responsibility toward the family after the memorial service has passed. Keep showing love and care equally important even after the funeral services have passed and people are back to their normal routines. To fill the void of a loved one’s demise is not easy. It can take long some time forever to heal the pain. You must stay in touch with the family and see if they are doing well. A little effort from your end can go a long way to the family who are struggling to come out of the grief. You can make a call to the family once a week or leave some warming notes to let the family know you are there for them.
